The renowned Dutch brewery chose to sever its substantial ties with the nation, handing over all its operations to the Arnest Group for a mere symbolic price of €1.

The decision for Heineken to exit Russia was initially announced in March 2022, following Moscow’s controversial invasion of Ukraine. However, the process was anything but straightforward. With seven breweries and a workforce of 1,800 in Russia, the company’s exit strategy was fraught with challenges, both logistical and political.

CEO Dolf van den Brink, addressing the media about why Heineken’s exit from Russia took an extended period, stated, “Recent developments underscore the massive challenges large manufacturing firms face when trying to withdraw from Russia.” While acknowledging the criticism they faced for the delay, he emphasized the company’s dedication to ensuring the welfare of its employees. This commitment was evident as the deal with the Arnest Group, a leading Russian manufacturer of cosmetics and household products, guarantees job security for Heineken’s 1,800 Russian employees for the next three years.

Financially, Heineken’s exit from Russia comes at a hefty price. The brewery expects to bear losses of approximately €300 million ($324.8 million). Moreover, in line with the deal, Heineken has plans to cease the production of its Amstel brand in Russia within the next six months. Although Arnest Group has been granted a three-year license for specific regional brands to ensure uninterrupted business operations, Heineken will not be supporting these brands or receiving any financial gains from them.
